From my Chinese Opera or Wayang Photo Archives of 2010   1 comment

This is a series of photographs which I shot in 2010. When I was young, I never did appreciate such culturally rich wayang or Chinese Opera. As the years past, the local Chinese Opera is a dying lot if they do not re-invent themselves with new actors and actresses. Thus some of these Troupes employ “imported” stars from China or even Thailand. Nowadays we can even see Wayang Troupes from Fujian, China coming to our Malaysian shores during the Hungry Ghosts Month. It has been an objective for me to capture these Chinese Operas shows before these are scarce or extinct. However, the only set-back is that I am thoroughly English-educated and thus readung and conversing in Mandarin is indeed an obstacle for me to overcome.

  1. The photos are lovely. Thank you for posting them. I do hope this art form survives and goes from strength to strength. In Europe we constantly listen to opera in other languages. I find I’ve got used to it.
