The Dana at the Penang Wesak Celebration Day   2 comments

From the Wikipedia :- Dāna or Daan (Pāli, Sanskrit: दान dāna) is generosity or giving. In Hinduism and Buddhism, it is the practice of cultivating generosity. Ultimately, the practice culminates in one of the perfections (pāramitā): the perfection of giving – dāna-pāramitā. This can be characterized by unattached and unconditional generosity, giving and letting go.

Dāna as a formal religious act is directed specifically to a monastic or spiritually-developed person. In Buddhist thought, it has the effect of purifying and transforming the mind of the giver.

Generosity developed through giving leads to being reborn in happy states and the availability of material wealth.[2] Conversely, lack of giving leads to unhappy states and poverty.

Buddhists believe that giving without seeking anything in return leads to greater spiritual wealth. Moreover, it reduces the acquisitive impulses that ultimately lead to continued dukkha

Sunrise on the morning of the Sumatra Earthquake on 11 April, 2012   Leave a comment

I woke up at around 6.00 am this Wednesday morning as I was going to the Tanjung City Marina to join my friends for an early dawn shooting of the sunrise. The colours in the sky was running riot with such splendid vivid colours of so many shades and hues ranging from red, orange, yellow to blue. The cloud formations were simply irratically arranged and abnormal. Probably, nature was showing us something was about to occur – stormy rains. The end result was the earthquake of over 8 in the Richter scale off Sumatra – happenning on the Indian plate of the earthquake=prone area. Penang was prepared for a warning of a tsunami strike at 9.11 pm that night but it was later aborted at 8.30 pm. It is better to be prepared than caught “with the pants down” .
