This 2-day event is specially brought to you again by the Penang State Government for visitors to have a one-of-a-kind experience. The inaugural HAB Fiesta held during the Year of Festivals 2015, saw over 100,000 visitors from around the region and abroad. There were 15 hot air balloons floating above and displayed, with special shaped ones such as Trump, Darth Vader and Humpty Dumpty. Visitors made a long beeline to the ticketing booths for their tethered rides from as early as 2am. All that waiting for the awesome tethered ride was worth the while claimed most of them.

What’s in store for the upcoming HAB Fiesta?

Aside from the balloon displays, there will surely be ‘night glow’ shows, free flying balloons and cold inflation where anyone can walk into a balloon envelope that’s filled with cold air as it lies on the ground. Other side activities and entertainment will also be organised throughout the event.

When is the best time to watch the balloons? What if it rains?

The setting up of balloons will start as early as 7am. It’s best to be there slightly earlier to find a good viewing spot. However, not all balloons will be inflated at the same time, as the timings may vary. The balloons will be displayed from 7.30am – 9am in the mornings and in the evenings, it will be up by 6pm. The final session of balloons on display is at 8.45pm on both nights which is the ‘Night Glow’. All balloon displays are subject to weather conditions, i.e. too windy, too hot and rain will hinder the balloons to be set up.

What is the highlight of the event?

The highlight of the event is ‘Night Glow’ on the evenings of 9 & 10 February. This is where all the balloons will be stationary at the launching field, and will be lit-up with an accompaniment of music and lights.

Why can’t I see any balloons in the afternoon or when it’s raining?

Due to our tropical climate, the hot weather does not permit the balloons to be flown or inflated in the afternoon as the temperature is high. The balloons require hot air to be blown into the balloon envelope and this poses dangerous conditions for the balloon to be inflated and flown. Also, in the afternoons, the windy atmosphere causes risks for passengers. During rainy conditions, the balloons will get waterlogged, again making it unsuitable to beinflated or flown.

  2. However, the sad part is that by 9.30 am, these hot air balloons shall be taken down at the external temperature does not allow the balloon to float upwards anymore. Currently, the climate in the country is simply too hot.
