The Saturday of 23rd April, 2016 was a busy Performing Arts Day for me as it was also the 400th Death Anniversary of William Shakespeare but did not see any of his actual plays. Took some photographs at the Butterfly Lovers’ Rehearsal and often commonly called the China’s Romeo and Juliet in the afternoon at Studio 2, Penangpac. At night I saw the Ballet Illumination Dance Presentation from Singapore which I managed to photo-shoot two years ago. I am only posting a selection of Ling Goh’s Butterfly Lovers on my WordPress Blog today. Only a part of the play was featured in this presentation on that day.

Did my class-mate – Michael Cheah’s daughter from Australia perform? I am sure she did as there is a ballerina “Miss Cheah” stated in the programme. I did not check further as it was getting late and so went straight home after late lunch/dinner/supper of Bah Kut Teh.

From the Teochew Puppet and Opera House’s Facebook Site
“As part of our monthly Teochew Cultural Night in 2016, Teochew Puppet and Opera House has invited renowned Shantou opera performer Liu Xiaoli to guest star in “Butterfly Lovers: Maiden Meeting”, with TP&OH director Ling Goh. Liu Xiaoli stars as Zhu Yingtai, with Ling Goh as Liang Shanbo.

Zhu Yingtai, a young woman who disguises herself as a man to study the classics, and her study partner Liang Shanbo, form a close friendship. At the day of their parting, Yingtai suggests betrothing her sister – secretly herself! – to Shanbo. “Maiden Meeting” depicts Shanbo meeting Yingtai in female garb for the first time.

Often called “China’s Romeo and Juliet”, or the Butterfly Lovers, the doomed love between Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai is one of the most famous romances in Chinese literature.”

It was a great performance from these two excellent Teochew performers. Highly recommended show but all the tickets had been sold out!

Ms Ling Goh as Liang Shanbo (male part) of the Butterfly Lovers often known as China’s Romeo and Juliet. It is a tragic love story with a sad ending with the subsequent deaths of both lovers.

Update on the Weather in George Town, Penang
Raining heavily on Sunday, April 24th 2016 in my locality of Pulau Tikus in the late morning after I awoke. I hope it is raining also in the water catchment areas. My “world-class, non-weather proof” internet shall be affected again with the rain. Heard from the radio a few weeks ago that Penang has enough water for a month ? True?

If there is not enough water during the dry season, then the government will resort to water rationing though it rarely happens in Penang in the past.

Bye.
