Developing Your Eye II, Day Two: “Mystery”

I took this photograph during a Taiwanese Festival in Penang. With the blue lighting and the special make-up of the costumed performer, this photograph exudes a mysterious and unusual feeling in the act. How do you feel?

A photo can create a mood and communicate an idea that transcends its subject. At this performance at the Montreal Jazz Festival, there was a sense of anticipation, enhanced by dramatic lighting that revealed silhouettes on stage.

What were we about to watch and hear? It was a mystery:

Today, share an image that creates a sense of mystery. A lone mitten on the sidewalk. A trail leading off into the distance. A creaky door, left open. Intrigue us.

Today’s Tip: Manipulate the light available to you to create a particular effect — use it to cast shadows or highlights to create a moody image. Work with natural light, or use an artificial light source.
