Hi everyone,
Before I proceed with my report, I would like to apologise to any of you, for any embarrassment or mistakes caused before and during the Ferry Cruise on 20th October and during the Bicentenary Dinner on 21st October 2016. In the cause of running the 2 events, wanting to get things done, on both days, there is no excuse for me to show my temper. For that, my sincere apologies if I have offended you. This will be the last time, if ever, my temper will ever shoot again.
I would like to combine both the events in the report.
The Ferry Cruise 2
The Ferry Cruise went ahead on schedule at 7pm, after a haphazard way of distributing the collage and song sheets and the torch light to all. We did not have a proper table and so had to lay it on the ground to distribute.
The weather was good to us, following rains the previous days. There were forecasts of high tides and foul weather. But Thank God, it was all smooth sailing later.
We had food catered by Eden Catering, with a long buffet spread and a laksa stall and the pan fried lamb chops. I catered for 160 pax, but our total participants from us classmates and guests and teachers, excluding the Penang Port Staff, were 155. All the food were consumed except for some bags of fried rice which were left behind.
As usual a 5kg birthday cake was presented and the October birthday boys, Peter Chew Sing Hoong, Gary Tan Leng Hoe, Tham Meng Keat, Tan Kok Kheng, Anver Hussain, Khoo Hong San, Lee Weng Thiang, Shieh Wen Kaiy, Jegatheesan, Bernard Yeo Keat Gim and Ooi Sin Teik were serenaded with the birthday song.
In all our previous gatherings, there were no birthday boys actually celebrating their birthdays during our gathering. Here on board the Ferry, an additional cake was brought in to celebrate the birthday of Shieh Wen Kaiy, whose birthday fell on 20th October.
As with our previous gatherings, we would not have been able to have these gatherings without the generous support of classmates who generously donated money to our cause.
For this I would like to THANK the following for their generous contributions to the Ferry Cruise 2,
RM300 from Ong Hean Kheng, RM350 from Anver Hussain, RM500 from Chan Hon Thiam, Quah Boo Siew, and Tan Kok Joo. RM1,000 from Jamil Murshid, Jenny Cheong and Ho Kee Hang. RM2,000 from Khoo Hong San, John Lee Boon Hup, Lim Hun Soon and Toh Li Li and Ong Nai Pew. RM3,000 from Wong Peng Cheang and US$3,000 converted RM11,890 from Koay Thean Lye.
When Thean Lye, wrote to me on 5th November last year, saying he was coming to attend both the events and will contribute US$3,000 to us, my job of having the Ferry Cruise for our reunion gathering was made easier. I did not mention to all as I wanted the commitments from you all to attend both the events. When I asked for contributions for the food and other expences, I was overwhelmed by the fantastic response. I had to turn down some classmates who wanted to contribute while on board the Ferry that night.
We gave away to everyone present a collage of the updated photos of our Then and Now portraits and a led torch light which was given by Tan Kok Kheng, With so many things to handle on that night, I forgot to mention my Thanks to Kok Kheng for the torch lights. Thank you KK for the torch lights. To Chew Sze Meng, for the work on the collage and the name tags which we wore during the Ferry and the Bicentenary dinner. Indeed we made many heads turn when we wore the name tags during the Bicentenary Dinner on 21st October in the PFS Field. The other Old Frees were indeed envious and in awe of our tags.
The Bicentenary souvenir ties were presented to our sponsors who have over the 4 gatherings who have contributed at least RM1,000.00 in total. The following were presented ties by Mr Poon Poh Kong and Datuk Tan Boon Lin,
Ho Kee Hang, Lim Kee Choon, Ong Hean Kheng, Chan Hon Thiam, Tan Kok Joo, Anver Hussain, Jamil Murshid, Ong Nai Pew, Khoo Hong San, Jenny Cheong and Tony Wong, Freddie Ong Hean Kooi, Ooi Sin Teik, Mohd Fauzi Yon, Lim Teong Seng, Wong Peng Cheang, John Lee Boon Hup, Lim Hun Soon and Toh Li Li, Peter Chew Sing Hoong, Ahmad Ibni Hajar, Teoh Ban Bee and Koay Thean Lye.
In between the cake cutting and the presentations, the music was in full swing. After a slow start, our classmates started to join in the keyboardist and the Filipino singer Janet to sing songs of the 1960’s. Then the girls and boys got down to the band area to start dancing the night away.
All these music and dancing were made possible, by the single contribution of Teoh Ban Bee. He went to see the keyboardist and the singer to practise the School Song and other songs which we normally sing during the gatherings. Thank you Ban Bee for the time spent to practise with the band and all in all more than RM3,000.00 were paid for by Ban Bee. Not forgetting the time spent in getting the collage, song sheets and class list (for new attendees) printed, the lunches paid whenever we meet and some other expenses which he did not even want to claim. All these he did it for the Group and is always the quiet man behind the scene. He said he wanted everyone to have a happy and good time.
To my other quiet committee, Kenneth Oh Weng Mun, Tan Kok Kheng, Lim Soo Peng, Rahumat Ibrahim and Bobby Lim Beng Soon, thank you. KK, thank you for the torch lights, Kenneth, thanks for helping out in sorting the collages etc, Soo Peng, for the photography, Rahumat, for helping out during the Ferry Cruise and at PFS, to Bobby, thank you for helping us get insured for the Ferry Cruise. Thank God, it was all smooth Cruising, no untoward accident happened. There is no choice for us. but to spend RM842 on a Public Liability insurance before we can have the Cruise. Also to the 2 ladies behind the scene, Sharon, for all the typing and paper work and to Beverly for the help to pack the bags,
There were quite a number of no shows from our classmates. Ong Hean Kheng had to miss the cruise, He was already there waiting to go, when his partner develop some allergy and he had to go back. Khoo Boo Chai and Caris were there and when we board the Ferry, both of them did not board,
This Ferry Cruise 2, is by far a better Cruise than the one we had on 8th Dec 2012. There were more participants and this time there is live music and judging from the singing and dancing, I think, everyone enjoyed themselves.
Suddenly, the Ferry made its return journey back and we were give 10 minutes to take any last minute group photos. All good things must end, and so ended our Ferry Cruise 2 at 11 pm. I think everyone disembarked very happy.
I must say THANK YOU to all the sponsors, and all who helped and everyone who attended the Cruise, for a very memorable cruise evening.
I would be doing injustice to John Lee Boon Hup and Wong Peng Cheang, if I don’t mention their contribution. Both knew they will not be able to attend the Ferry Cruise, yet, they donated to our Cruise. John, just got accepted to a Pilot Trainers job and he was under training. He missed both the nights. Peng Cheang was supposed to be in US to attend a seminar, but ended up entertaining an Educational delegation, He attended the Bicentenary Dinner as he earlier promised me. Thank you John and Peng Cheang.
The list of participants will be posted later. It would make this reading rather long and boring.

The PFS BICENTENIAL DINNER on 21st October 2016
What can I say about the Bicentenary Dinner? What a difference a day made. The difference was we had a jolly good Cruise on 20th, and 21st, it was a let down.
We paid for 18 Tables of RM1,500 per table, As the date got nearer, there were guys pulling out from the Dinner, so much so I had to sell off one table to a group of young Free School boys. Despite that, we had only 152 participants (classmates and spouses and former teachers) for the Dinner, for our 17 tables.
My sincere Thanks to Ahmad Ibni Hajar, Peter Chew Sing Hoong and Teoh Ban Bee for paying for one table each, for our not well to do classmates and the former teachers.
This time we were mere participants to the BIGGEST GATHERING IN THE PENANG FREE SCHOOL. We expected something of a big noisy occasion. But we did not expect the sauna like atmosphere. Well Anver Hussain had said it earlier and some of you have also written in. It was so hot and humid, we should have just worn our light blue tshirt and be done with it, no need for the jacket.

But we can say to those who did not attend, Yes We were there, when Penang Free School celebrated its 200 Years Dinner in the Penang Free School Field on 21st October 2016.
The whole Bicentenary Dinner was organised by fellow Old Frees who have not done such a mammoth task before in their lives
Half way through the night more than 60% of our classmates left for home. Some of us stayed back till the end to watch the beautiful fire works display.
It was on a whole a wonderful 2 days and nights for us. Having experienced whatever the Sesquicentenary celebrations in 1966, we are indeed lucky and blessed to witness the Penang Free School Bicentenary. There are still some overseas classmates who have not gone back yet and to these guys, have a safe trip back home.
I shall provide the list of all Bicentenary participants in another write up. Thank you to all sponsors and all who attended. My apologies if I have missed anyone from the list.
To Ahmad Hajar and Peter Chew, Thank you for your support in all our gatherings, and to Ban Bee, the main man behind all our gatherings, Thank you also for all your support through out all our gatherings since 2003.
Cheers,’
Hock Eng, who will just be a participant in future events
