A Night of Cantonese Wayang   Leave a comment

A Night of Cantonese Wayang

During the month of the Festival of the Hungry Ghost in George Town, Penang, Malaysia, we get to see a variety of Chinese Opera in different dialects like Hokkien, Teochew, and lesser ones like Cantonese and Hakka (which I had not seen before). Here is a sample of Wayang or Chinese Opera in Cantonese which is my referred choice due to their beautiful costumes barring the ages of the able and good performers.

Wayang photo-shooting continues

With my limping left leg. the blogger continued photo-shooting of this only Cantonese Chinese Opera or Wayang in the city. While mobility can be problematic, i took a chair and sat down to shoot using my 70-200 mm telephoto lens. There is a problem with the lighting on the stage with my opinion. The performers are lighted up well in some location and cast in dark shadow in other location thus selecting spots for photography is precise timing and some luck.

Happy viewing.

First Night of the Cantonese Opera   Leave a comment

First Night of the Cantonese Opera

First Night of the Cantonese Opera of 2016  marked the Opening Congratulatory Tribute to the Taoist King of Hades during this Festival of the Hungry Ghost at this location in Penang. Last night was the 10th day of the Seventh Moon of the Chinese Lunar Calendar (12th August, 2016).

This is the only Cantonese Opera Troupe from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia thus our very own local Troupe. However, sad to say this Troupe, according to the Lady Owner, is smaller in size than last year. From my observation of my photo-shooting over last 5 years, the performers are aging steadily and the musicians too. If there is no younger performers taking over, this Troupe, at  best, will last another few years more. It is sad but definitely true.

Local Cantonese Opera – an opera of the seniors, experienced and the aged
It saddened me, even as a senior citizen, that the local Cantonese Opera is slowly reaching its end of life cycle. I had taken the photographs of this Kuala Lumpur-based Troupe for more than seven years and had seen the same musicians and performers for over these years. Slowly aging and getting less healthier with some, I noted. The unique quality of the musical troupe was the only aged violinist available in all the Chinese Opera Troupes that I had ever encountered. There is no under-study or apprentice to take over from him, I can see.
Last year in 2014, there was a guest female performer from Hong Kong and some younger male performers, but not this time around in 2015, I noticed that there is no special invited foreign prformers or younger supporting cast at all. Sad but true. Let us hope for the best for this one and only local Cantonese Wayang Troupe in Malaysia. Malaysia Boleh (Can Do It).
