Though Malaysia has Islam as the Official Religion of the country, the non-Muslim section of the Malaysian population also practise other religions like Christianity, Hinduism. Buddhism, Taoism, Sikhism and others. I am a Buddhist who also observe Taoist rituals and prayers due to traditional ancestral belief.

Balik Pulau (literally meaning “back of the island” in Malay) is a town in Southwestern part of Penang Island, Malaysia. The town is most famous for natural local agricultural produce like Durians and Nutmegs. A visit to the town will be incomplete if there is no visit to the wet market and food court for the food like laksa, pasembur, and nutmeg juice.
However, Monday is not a good day to visit this town for my recent trip here as most stalls selling pickled fruits, fish fritters, spicy potato chips, belachan, and local procusts are closed for the day for rest. Anyway, my main objective in Balik Pulau was to shoot the wall murals and other interesting places like the Church.

Every year, thousands of Catholic pilgrims from all over Malaysia including others countries such as Singapore and Australia visit the Church of St Anne, Bukit Mertajam for the St. Anne’s Annual Novena & Feast Day Celebration. It is one of the biggest religious celebrations in Malaysia.

The 10-day Novena brings a carnival-like atmosphere to the town of Bukit Mertajam and the church compound. The theme for this year’s fest is “Called, Chosen and Sent”
There will be different masses and prayers throughout this 10 days, which is conducted in various languages.
Built in 1957, The Church of St. Anne, Bukit Mertajam is a significant part of Penang’s history. Many historical relic can be found at the church’s compound such as the beautiful stained glass at the altar. Another attraction of the church that is available all year round is the 15 Cross Stations with life-sized statues that depicts the crucifixion of Lord Jesus Christ.

Funeral of my late Brother-in-law Mr Ang Teng Cheng   1 comment

My late Brother-in-law passed away on last Saturday, 15 December, 2012. His funeral ceremony was held yesterday – Wednesday, 19 December, 2012 at 10.00 am. According to local Malaysian Chinese customs, the body can be kept for 1 Day ( the day one passed away } or 3 Days, 5 Days and up to a maximum of 7 Days. My late wife, the youngest sister in the Ang Family of ten of 6 brothers and 4 sisters, Ang Saw Ai was only kept for 3 days as my parents are still alive. The younger generation’s ceremonial rights cannot exceed that of the older generation as tradition goes. Back to the present, my Brother-in-law converted to Christiany in his old age following his wife. Thus, the funeral was held in local Christian was with even the services and hymns sang in Hokkien – a Chinese dialect of Fujian and Taiwan. His remains was cremated. God bless his soul.
