Attractive decor of Perut Rumah Restaurant   Leave a comment

Attractive decor of Perut Rumah Restaurant
We found the decorative items very attractive and suitable for this Nyonya-cuisine Restaurant. I missed shooting the porcelain nyonya wares, now considered as antiques. I used to collect some of these porcelain until these were too expensive for my pocket.

Dinner of Nyonya Cuisine at the Perut Rumah, Penang
We were invited by old classmate Ooi Sin Teik to a sumptous Nyonya Dinner at Perut Rumah, Bawasah Road, Penang on Friday, July 10, 2015 at 7.00 pm. Sin Teik was my classmate since our Primary school days from Westlands Primary School (1958 -1963) and later at Penang Free School – our secondary school from 1964 till 1970. A total of 13 years of education in English medium. We were actually the final batch of students who sat for the MSSEE – Malayan Secondary School Entrance Examinations. The cream of the top students from all Primary Schools in Penang was only selected to enter Penang Free School after this examinations. Back to the present moment, the guestlist includes our Taikor Teoh Hock Eng, Dr Quah Boo Siew, Lim Cheng Kee, Lam Poh Kee, the blogger, Chang Sing Hai from New Zealand, Khoo Soo Hock from Australia and the host Ooi Sin Teik from Singapore. Spouses were also present. Food was great and so was the company. We had a great time telling old stories, of course. I had not met Soo Hock since leaving school in 1970.
The other guests were the relatives of my friend Sin Teik.

Our Grand Reunion of Penang Free School’s Class of 1964 to 1970   4 comments

A great Grand Reunion of Class 1964 – 1970 of Penang Free School was held on Saturday, 15 September, 2012! at Penang Port’s bungalow located at Batu Ferringhi, Penang.

Commentary from our “monitor” Mr Teoh Hock Eng – the one holding the “rotan” or cane,

Hello everyone,
Can you hear me!!!!!
Oh wow, what a hangover, what a night to remember.

It was a hangover for me yesterday after a fantastic night with nearly 100% turnout by us classmates and the teachers.

Those who were not there that night, it was a night you really missed. Sorry not to rub salt but its the truth.

After the Penang Port Hari Raya Open House lunch at the Penang Port compound some of the outstation classmates made a beeline to the bungalow.

At the Penang Port Open House, over 40 classmates and the spouses and family were there and we were really honoured by our classmate Ahmad Hajar to be seated in the VVIP area and we had tables reserved for us just next to the TYT, the Governor of Penang’s main table. One of our tables was hijacked when some of our classmates stood up to greet one another.

It was quite chaotic when most met up there as there was alot of handshakes for those who has not seen each other for 44 or 42 years and some even more. We were turning the VVIP area into a School canteen.

We were invited by Ahmad to have a group photo taken with the TYT and his wife at the end of the lunch. After which its towards to Grand Reunion.

The Grandmother of All Reunions.

Yes it was the Grandmother of all Reunions. 66 classmates and 24 spouses and 10 teachers showed up at the Reunion Dinner.

The start of the Do was quite haphazard initially when the tables and chairs were put in the wrong place. Luckily the caretaker was there to help and 3 classmates who came back from the swim in the sea were called to help. Thanks to Lee Foo Wah, Liew Hock Chark and Kris Tan Geok Khoon for the help to set the tables and the other facilities in order.

My thanks also goes to Alice Aw Chooi Imm and her husband Stan and Ashok and Wife Bhagwanti, in short called Bee for the help in putting the goodie bags in order.

My registration team of Kenneth Oh Weng Mun and Sharon, Ban Bee’s wife and Beverly their maid in registering classmates as the come in and collecting their dues for the goodie bag and name tagging them. Thank you for the job well done, it would have been easier on you all had all classmates come early as I suggested.

Dinner was served by Eden Catering and I promised you all hawker food and sure it was. It was Penang hawker food. We had Seafood Char Keow Teow, Penang Hokkein Mee, Penang Laksa, Cucuk Udang, Ais Kacang, BBQ station consisting of foot long sausages, lamb chops, grilled prawns and salad bar and teh tarik and cordial water.

The response to the food served was so good that within less than one and half hours, most of the food were finished. I had to apologise to Ahmad for not having his favourite lamb chops available for him. Anyway we are glad that the food were all consumed, and at the end of the night there were only less than 10 packets of Hokkien Mee and Laksa given to us by the caterers. Unlike the previous gathering there were alot of leftovers which is very sinful.Even my bengkang ubi kayu which I baked 3 trays were wiped cleaned. Only the cakes survived, about one quarter of the 5 kg cake was left behind!!!

In any event of a dinner, we have to pay for it either by ourselves or paid by others so we can have a free makan. right? Yes the dinner was fully sponsored by our own Dato Ahmad Ibni Hajar. Not only did he sponsored the dinner, the bungalows were booked for us and the canopy also. He even gave everyone of us classmates a golf shoe bag as part of our goodie bag items. The teachers also got it.

Thank You Ahmad for your sponsorship and as one of the main guy behind the whole Reunion Dinner.

My other sponsors for our Gathering were Lee Boon Hup aka John RM1,500. and RM1,000 from Peter Chew Sing Hoong, Freddie Ong Hean Kooi and Teoh Ban Bee. RM500 from Anver Hussain, Chan Hon Thiam, Khoo Hong San, David Ong Liang Thye, Kris Tan Geok Khoon, Tan kok Joo, Tan Phaik Hai and Yusof Darus. RM200 from Adi Satria, Alice Aw Chooi Imm and Ong Hean Kheng.

Tan Kok Kheng for 75 bags (from Chartis) for us to put in our souvenirs and to Chung Chok Yin for the Herballife energy bars.

After I have welcomed everyone to the Party and the acknowledgements made to all the sponsors and donors to make this Party a sucess, we started our proceedings with the School Song and boy we sang with gutso. Then we sang a “new anthem”, this song was taken from John Denver’s “Take me home , country roads”, Me and Ban Bee changed some of the words on Friday afternoon and with the help of his daughter, did it and printed it in 15 minutes. Ashok Kumar has sent the lyrics to the song earlier.

Then the birthday boys of September, Yusof Darus, Ahmad Muwarni, David Ong Liang Thye, Lam Poh Weng, Ch’ng Jin Teik, Ashok Kumar, Chong Soon Lee, Zoekipli Taib and Chung Chok Yin were called up to have them celebrate with the birthday song, sung. And they blew the candles for 61 years old. Poon Poh Kong was invited to cut the cake with Ahmad and myself.

We did 3 toasts for the night. One to our departed teachers and classmates, 19 of them as far as I know. The second toast was for everyone present and the third and loudest cheers and yam seng was to our Alma Mater The Penang Free School.

Every classmate who came and paid RM50.00 was given a goodie bag. Because of the generosity of our sponsors we were able to add another T-shirt to each bag, I told you guys earlier one T-shirt. Included was also a mug, a cap, a Herballife energy bar and a golf shoe bag. As mention earlier this was sponsored by Ahmad Hajar and was given to the classmates only. The common T-shirt for all was a light blue T-shirt , the guys will get a dark blue one and the ladies a peach red one. For your information, the goodies bag cost us RM70.00.

The 10 teachers present were given 2 T-shirts like the guys, a cap, a mug, the energy bar and the shoe bag and a RM100.00 angpow as a token of appreciation to them. The Ex HM Poon Poh Kong, took the mike to thank all of us for inviting him and the other teachers to the Reunion and he hope we will invite them again in future, but without the I repeat again!!!

Boy, like the previous gatherings, it was difficult to manage the crowd. I had to ask a classmate, Othman Hussain to bring a thumb thick cane but he got me a normal thin cane. I gave it to the teachers to administer discipline for the night but failed. Boys will be boys, even girls were no better. Very noisy, hard to control. Look for the photos shots with me carrying the cane, no joke.

I did promise surprises to the Party. Yes they was. A mask changing and some magic show was performed by a Thai friend of mine. It did surprise many who were watching it for the first time, and the feedback from many was it was a very good show.

As it was the eve of Malaysia day and as Anver Hussain posted a message earlier when he tried to get classmates to attend, quote “AND let not the initial bang become a whimper as had happened in the past. Rather let us make the bang a blast this time and motivate HE to organise a grandfather of get togethers. “, you gave me an idea.

The Idea—We had fireworks for the night, it was a 138 shots firewords. And boy did it cause a commotion, the bangs and the claps and not only that, I was told by Adi Satria that it cause a commotion to one the hawker stalls across the road. A burnt piece of the fireworks fell on the food of the customer and he refused to pay for the food. Adi pleaded ignorance to that mishap and only told me later about it.

We had a good laugh. Luckily the stall guy did not come out charging at us, maybe he knew there were Datos at the Party. In fact yes there were 4 of them, Ahmad Hajar, Syed Razlan, Jamil Murshid and Tony Wong, spouse of Jenny Cheong Mei Wan.

As usual, in all gatherings, a group photo shoot was done and this time it was very tough having all 66 classmate in, in a place restricted by height and space because of the canopy. Anyway the photographers did a very good job having all of us in to have the photos taken. We did one photo shoot with the teachers but could not fit in all classmates.

A lot of photos were taken by classsmates and the 2 photograhers enlisted for the night. We hope to have all the photos selected and copied either in a CD or VCD and sent or passed to all of you at cost. Post in your own photos to the net and we shall try to keep it in the photo album. I have already created one album from Ashok Kumar’s photos posting.

The night went on with the band in attendance and some classmates took the mike to belt out their old favourites. In between the songs, Syed Razlan was invited to give us his usual off the cuff talk and joke. But this time, Las Vegas showtime was performed in front of lesser crowd because there were many Cinderellas around, about half the crowd left by 1045pm. What a shame.

Anyway those who stayed back enjoyed the night till passed 2.30 am

There was a lot of rekindling of old friendship, meeting new ones and I think our bond following this Reunion has got us closer to each other and I hope our unique bond of the Penang Free School Class of 1964-1970 will continue to gell us into one big family. It was a very nostalgic night, one I will remember, for the friends whom I have see before and seeing again mostly from far away. The camaraderie of all present continued to the following 2 days with those staying in the bungalows joining up again for lunch and dinner.

Phang Peng Yoke and Hwang Hong Shi called me to thank us for the memorable and happy night. Hong Shi has posted in the facebook on our Reunion and I shall be posting him the photos so that he can show off our night to the rest.
