More from Cantonese Wayang or Opera in Penang   Leave a comment

More from Cantonese Wayang

From Wikipedia
Cantonese opera
The art form is one of the first organised forms of entertainment in Hong Kong. The art form still exists today in its traditional format despite the changing trends in other industries. There is a debate about the origin(s) of Cantonese opera, but it is universally accepted that the predecessors of Cantonese opera originated from the northern part of China and slowly migrated to the southern province of Guangdong in late 13th century, during the late Southern Song Dynasty. Beginning in the 1950s, massive waves of immigrants fled Shanghai to destinations like North Point, boosting its fanbase.

A simple plot revolving around the money-grabbing mother-in-law and daughter conspiring against the daughter-in-law. The scholar son went to the Chinese Capital for the Imperial Examinations while the pregnant spouse stayed back in the village. Being expelled from the family home, she gave birth to a son. However, too poor and unable to provide food for the baby, she gave the baby to a friend to find the rightful father. The scholar having successfully passed the Imperial Examinations with flying colours, is forced to marry an Imperial Court Minister’s daughter. Seeing his friend in the Capital one day, he took the young baby and raised the son up. After some years past, he went back to the village and re-unite with the first wife happily. The End.

Great entertainment at Hean Boo Thean’s Annual Dinner   Leave a comment

After a year of busy activities, it is time to let the hair down at the Hean Boo Thean’s Annual Dinner at Weld Quay, Penang. About 200 tables ( of 10 diners each table ) were laid out under canopies at the area near the Floating Kuan Yin Temple as it was still rainy season. We, the volunteer photographers, were allocated special table for photographers. Food and the entertainment were great and we enjoyed ourselves tremendously.
