Photographic Society of Penang Outing and Event Shooting : Guan Jiang Shou ( Hell General )
In Taoist mythology, there are guards in the underworld who serve the nether deities. Many of them are depicted in guan jiang shou (senior officers) and ba jia tuan (eight generals) performances, which are an important feature of traditional folk processions all over Taiwan as they serve to punish evil and reward good.
The main role of the Guan Jiang Shou, much like the Ba Jia Jiang, is to police evil spirits, punish evil and reward good. In this role, Guan Jiang Shou sometimes perform a ‘night tour’ on the evening before a major ceremony, clearing the path of the ceremony of evil spirits so that the next day, the gods can pass through smoothly.

Open House at a Housing Developer Company
In order to encourage new buyers to their housing project, these private housing developer companies are hosting Open Houses where finger food and drinks were served during the Chinese New Year 2016. Lion Dance and other activities were organized to add to the entertainment. As the place was nearby our residence, we also joined in the fun by walking over to the venue.

Traditionally the eyes of the Lions of the Lions’ Dance are blind until enlightened by a special blessing ceremony by the master or sifu and sometime cases a Taoist priest by dotting the eyes with a blessed reddish fluid with a brush. With such blessings the new Lion head made of paper and bamboo has new seeing eyes!

This is a photo outing organized by the PSP – Photograhic Society of Penang on last Sunday, 13 November, 2011 on Wushu Demonstration and Lion Dance. A fee of RM20.00 was charged for members. It was a worthwhile session where one can get to mingle with the sifu’s or masters of photography in Penang like Mr Song, Mr Loh, Peter Ho, Sam and many more. Yes, come horn your skills with PSP in future. The Wushu action was so fast, I had only blurry shots and my manual focus was indeed lousy indeed. Hopefully, I shall improve in time – the commodity I have in short supply. Happy photography.

It is indeed to capture these jumping, fast-moving acrobatic “lions” as the skillful participants jump from one stilt to the other. Excuse me for some of blurry shots.
