At the City’s Square of Buon Ma Thuot   Leave a comment

At the City’s Square of Buon Ma Thuot
We arrived in Vietnam in the midst of their festivities of the takeover of the South Vietnamese Government 40 years ago by the Communist North Vietnam. Thus, the City Square was decorated with flowers and bill-boards and was located across the road from our hotel. It was early morning and we decided to take a walk around the City Square where we could see groups of female senior citizen of my age range – dancing cultural dances, singing and enjoying snacks, while the male counterparts were exercising by the water fountain in the early morning sun. The male senior citizen were a friendly lot and were kind enough to pose with me for a photograph for rememberance. In peaceful time, everybody can enjoy and appreciate their lives. The unified Vietnam has progressed far to the present time from the warring times of the past. The super-powera were not always right in demanding democracy in every country. Vietnam is a good example to follow. Thank you for the kindness shown by the people here. Make peace and NOT war like now in the Middle East!

From Wikipedia:-
Buôn Ma Thuột (formerly Lac Giao) or sometimes Buon Ma Thuot or Ban Mê Thuột, is the capital city of Đắk Lắk Province, in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Its population is approximately 300,000. The city is the largest in Vietnam’s Central Highlands region, and is famous as the regional “capital of coffee”.

Buôn Ma Thuột is served by Buon Ma Thuot Airport.

Location
The city locates at 12.6667° N, 108.0500° E, right at the heart of the central highland of Viet Nam, 1300 km from Ha Noi, 500 km from Da Nang, and 350 km from Ho Chi Minh City. Lying on a fairly flat highland, at an average height of 536m (1608 ft) above the sea, Buon Ma Thuot has a vital role in Viet Nam’s national security and defense system. Buon Ma Thuot is the capital of Dak Lak Province and also the biggest city in Central Highlands (Tay Nguyen).

History
In 1904 Đắk Lắk Province was established by the French and Buôn Ma Thuột was selected as the provincial administrative centre, rather than the trading center of Đôn on the Srepok River. Buôn Ma Thuột was originally settled by the Ê Đê, but due to the incoming Việt settlement after the Vietnam War and the active acculturation policy, less than 15% (around 40,000) are still Montagnards. An important battle took place there at the end of the second Vietnam war.

Institutions
Buôn Ma Thuột is the site of Tay Nguyen University.

Life at 62 – Celebrating a Senior Citizen’s Birthday   Leave a comment

Sometimes being on Facebook makes you many cyber-friends and the friends you knew before the internet age. Getting many birthday wishes can be heart-warming and happy as you still have friends who remembered but from the reminder on the Facebook’s birthday list on the right column. So after getting more than 50 birthday wishes to-date. This is my acknowledgement on Facebook ….
“Thank you for the Birthday greetings, so I was thinking of this long-winded statements about my life to-date …
Life at 62 ( like Beatles’ song ” When I am 64 ” )
Life is smooth but sometimes sad passage,
If one can reach this age,
Loneliness strikes as missing loved ones,
My wife, my dad,
So very sad.
Life goes on so, must endure and enjoy,
Younger life was time to toil,
Not financially rich but not overly over-debt,
Still can sleep soundly but mostly over-slept.
( End of Part 1 – shall continue when I come back )
Bye”

Loneliness can be of one’s choice,
Or one can fill the home with happy, cheerful noise,
With two sons and three dogs,
With a helpful companion so I can still write my blogs,
Find solace in re-starting my photography.
Definitely a great consoling therapy,
Not completely to perfection,
But, doing it to my gratifying satisfaction.

Yes, there is so mush to write but to cut the story short. As Buddha expounded ” Life is uncertain but death is certain ” so we shall live on in whatever circumstances. Take life and death as one’s karma but live on positively – doing more good and lesser or no bad or evil deeds. Sadhu, sadhu, sadhu.

This annual event as part of the Penang Wesak Celebrations was held again with participants from Old Folks’ Homes or Homes for the Aged, Societies for the physically handicapped, visually, speaking, hearing and mentally hadicapped. It is a hearteningly satifying dinner for these folks. Hope to see them next year of 2012.

Yes, this is a Christian or more specifically Roman Catholic-run Old Aged Home. It has my top marks for the most beautiful and well-managed Senior Citizen Home on Penang Island. An excellent job accomplished! The exterior has a modernistic resort-like appearance. Apart this look the facilities inside are even comparable to the best Private Hospital in Penang barring the medical equipment. The room is duble-bedded with attached bathroom / toilet. The beds are of the Private Hospital standard – see the slideshow to appreciate. I like the innovative names of occupants with their photographs for identification purposes. When asked on the “why” of the use of photos are used as the names are already stated on the door ? Well ? Any ideas ? Yes, we had not think through on the photos – the answer is Alzheismer’s Disease. It is for the occupants to identify themselves! If I had heard myself correctly, there is also a gym. Did I tell you all, there is a 100 years’ old lady most senior citizen in the photos. Can you identify her ?
