Peter Chew’s Vegetarian Dinner for class-mates on Thursday 26th October, 2017

In con-junction of the Nine Emperors Gods Festival when a strict vegetarian diet is observed by the devotees, our Mr Peter Chew was generous to throw us the Penang Lang class-mates a vegetarian steamboat dinner at a Vegan Restaurant along Gurney Drive. We are indeed grateful and thankful for his generosity.

My Recollection of the 2013 Trip to the Phuket Vegetarian Festival   Leave a comment

My Recollection of the 2013 Trip to the Phuket Vegetarian Festival.
During this Nine Emperor Gods Festival, I shall publish unpublished photos of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2013 when we were there to witness and photo-shoot this event. We must thank Bertrand Linet for encouraging us to go and experience this unforgettable event in Thailand of faith, devotion, dedication and belief in this Taoist Religious Festival. Some of the Vegetarian offerings, Temples and that of the female & male mediums in trance, in Phuket. Please note some photos in this series are quite scary, macabre and hair-raising so take your meals before viewing.

A Vegetarian Dana was held for Chief Monk of Dhammikarama Burmese Temple, Burmah Lane, Penang on occasion of his birthday with food cooked by nuns from Kek Lok Si Temple on Friday, 10 January, 2014. The Chief Monk has always reluctant to celebrate his birthday but he cannot refuse such a kind gesture from another Buddhist Temple. He, however, politely refuse to cut any birthday cakes as to him such practice of celebrating birthday is not correct in Buddhist practice. Sadhu, sadhu, sadhu.

Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2013 – Night 1 of my actual arrival at Phuket Town   Leave a comment

Starting out on Tuesday, 8th October, 2013 from my home as we arranged for the Hat Yai-bound van to pick us up at around 5.00am. Sean, my elder son, was also driving up to the Bayan Lepas Airport for his company’s trip to Kuala Lumpur for his company’s meeting but we left before he came out of the house. The van went down to Gurney Hotel to pick up a male Thai national and later down to Chulia Street office to pick several Thai women. Finally the total ten passengers (including us) filled the van and we were speeding across Penang Bridge heading northwards to Malaysian-Thai border. Some time was wasted at the Thai Immigration Check-point as there were some crowd but like the one I experienced last year. After reaching Hat Yai at 9.30 am and after a switch of van, we were now headed towards Phuket passing through Patthalong, Trang, Krabi, Phang Nga and finally crossing the short Sarasin Bridge to Phuket Island. After another 8 hours, we reached Phuket Town’s tour office, However, some time (around half hour) was wasted as the Tour Office could not find our Old Town Hostel located at 42, Krabi Road, Phuket probably due to language communication problem. Anyway, a Thai guide came and assisted, we finally reached the hostel at 5.00 pm. A room with bath-room attached with a double bed was offered. A fan was also available as it was actually raining all the way during out trip to Phuket, there was rather a cool and humid weather encountered. The price was around Bahts 500.00 per day for 2 paxs. The night’s dinner was vegetarian as we needed to observe the strict vegetarian diet on reaching Phuket. There was a whole street selling all varieties of vegetarian food and tasty too. Prices were reasonable. We did not shoot any photos inside the Temples as we did observe the vegetarian diet for our lunch. Next thing to do was to purchase white T-shirts and shorts or trousers. We had purchased our white T-shirts in Penang and we only needed to buy shorts and pyjamas-like pants. Prices are at 99.00 to 100.00 Bahts each. We went to bed as we were tired and await the arrival of Bertrand Linet from Bangkok tomorrow morning ie Wednesday, 9th October, 2013. Good night and lights off early.
